How to root the Galaxy Note 2 T889

How many smartphones can Chainfire root if Chainfire could root smartphones? Given XDA Developers member Chainfire’s popularity, that may be a difficult number to approximate. One thing’s for sure, the CF-Auto-Root package is up for grabs for every T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-T889 owner. Let’s say good-bye to flashing a pre-rooted stock ROM and the hassles that may come with it.

If you love the out-of-the-box features of your Note 2 but you’re unsure about flashing custom recovery to your phone then Chainfire’s root package is the right deal for you. Requirements

• A T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SGH-T889 with an unlocked bootloader.
• A Windows PC
• Handset USB drivers installed on the PC. You may install the drivers by installing Samsung Kies
• Enable USB debugging on your handset. Go to Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging.
• Disable antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also disable Samsung Kies and other software that accesses your phone. Such software can interfere with the procedure in this guide.
• Download the following:
  • Odin (Odin3-v1.85.zip, 198.6 kB)
    
  • CF-Auto-Root (CF-Auto-Root-t0ltetmo-t0ltetmo-sght889.zip, 12.4 MB)
• Make sure your device’s battery still has at least 70% power. You don’t want the device to shut down in the middle of the procedure.
• Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.

Instructions

1. Extract the Odin3 v1.85.exe and CF-Auto-Root-t0ltetmo-t0ltetmo-sght889 TAR file from the ZIP files that you’ve downloaded.
2. Click Odin3 v1.85.exe to launch Odin on your PC.
3. Turn your phone off.
4. Boot your phone to Download Mode. To do this, press and hold down the Volume Down, Home, and the Power buttons. When you see the warning screen, press Volume Up to continue to Download Mode.
5. Connect your phone to your PC using your phone’s USB cable. You will receive an “Added!!” message on your Odin window.
6. Click on PDA and select the .tar.md5 file you extracted earlier.
   • Note: Do not make any other changes in Odin. Do not tick the “Re-partition” option.
7. To flash, click on the Start button in Odin. A “PASS” message will appear at the top-left part of the Odin window to indicate that you have successfully installed CF-Auto-Root. Your phone will automatically reboot once root has been installed.
8. Unplug your phone from your PC after you see the Samsung logo on your phone’s screen.
   • Note: If you encounter a “FAIL” message from Odin or the program does not initiate, disconnect your phone from the computer and close the program. Afterwards, remove your phone’s battery and re-insert it before repeating steps 2 to 8.
